Apple AirTags: How to track your things with Find My App
Unboxing and setup
The Apple AirTag doesn’t need an introduction. There is plenty of buzz going around. You have the option of buying a single AirTag ($29)or a 4-pack ($99). I got the 4-pack and also ordered a separate AirTag holder with a key ring.
The packaging is pretty plain and minimal. There’s not really much to unbox, except the AirTags. The inside of the box shows instructions on either side.
The AirTag is activated as soon as you pull the plastic tab off, indicated by a small alert sound. The Airtag uses CR2032 coin battery and is IP67 rated water-resistant.
To attach the AirTag to your stuff, you'll need a secure AirTag holder. I bought mine from Belkin ($13), but Apple has collaborated with Hermès to create their own keyring starting from $299.
SET UP INSTRUCTIONS
- Tap the AirTag on your iPhone (or bring it close)
- Name your airtag (bag, keys, purse, etc)
- Attach it to the item
FIND MY APP FEATURES
- Follow the sound: If you’ve lost something nearby, this is the feature to use. I lost my keys somewhere on the couch. I just had to go in Find My App and play a sound.
2. Precision Finding: This feature tells you how near or far from your item you are. It will also point you in the right direction by an arrow indicator.
3. Find my network: Sometimes we lose things away from home like at a department store. Don’t worry! Any other iPhone or iPad helps track down your AirTag.
4. NFC-Lost Mode: By enabling lost mode, you’ll automatically get notified whenever your item is detected by another NFC-capable device. You also have the option to provide your contact details for a user to contact you about the lost item.
5. Privacy: Obviously, Apple has taken care of privacy. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted. Other phones in the network can receive BlueTooth signals from the AirTag and update the location in iCloud.
